Today (July 23) all of the hard work that many of us have put into this project started to pay off. As the FHE team started to demonstrate interventions, we saw many patients improve.

One of the most dramatic improvements was that made by a 3 1/2 year old. This child had not spoken or walked since the earthquake and although his behavior had been improving, a recent aftershock made things worse again.

When Ale Duarte, one of the team members, started to intervene with this child he was sitting in a chair, relatively immobile, and staring fixated on playing with his hands. Thirty minutes later this child was laughing, walking and making loud verbal utterances. Angel Meng, BJU Nurse, was translating during this session and I think she can tell you how overwhelmed everyone was. Several of the students in the training were stating that it was a miracle that this kid was doing so much.

Several other people were seen and helped today and some showed dramatic improvements and I wish I could write more but there is so much to do here. Tomorrow we focus on techniques for helping children and adolescents.

If you have contributed to this effort, please know that your contribution is much appreciated. We are operating on a "bare bones" budget and every Yuan, dollar, and Hong Kong Dollar helps!

Please donate to CHERP

Best Regards,

Rob Blinn, Ph.D.

There's one favorite ancient Chinese proverb:

If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, teach people.

This is CHERP.

God Bless!
