CHINA EARTHQUAKE RELIEF PROJECT
(CHERP)

PHASE TWO TRAINING SCHEDULE

Day 1 (Classroom)

Introduction to the China Earthquake Relief Project, Co-Sponsors and Trainers [30 minutes]

Introduction of Trainees [30 minutes]

Overview of the Stress/Trauma Response (PowerPoint) [1 hour]
- Real vs. Perceived Threat (autonomic responses)

Break

Activation [30 minutes]
- Physical, Emotional, Cognitive Signs and Symptoms
- Fight/Flight vs. Freeze
- Accessing the Sensory-Motor System and Discharging (Experiential: Tracking Sensations while watch Natures Lessons Videos)

Stabilization [1 hour]
- Strategies
- Grounding, Resourcing,Titration, Pacing
- Pendulation ("Moving between Distress and Resource")
- Additional Methods for Managing High Activation

Lunch

Activation/Stabilization Exercises [1 hour]]

Discussion of Exercises [30 minutes]

Break

Psychological First Aid Model [1.5 hours]
- Objectives

- SE in Psychological First Aid Exercises

Discussion of Field Work Plans for Day Two [15 minutes]

End Day One

Day 2 Field Work [clinics]
Each trainer will be assigned a training team of 6 trainees.
Trainers will see earthquake survivors who have been diagnosed as having stress-related disorders as a result of the earthquake.
Trainees will observe trainers working with earthquake survivors, taking note of the ways in which they assess the survivors concerns and use somatic techniques in the psychological first aid intervention model.

Following interventions with each earthquake survivor, each trainer will spend time with his/her training team to answer questions and discuss important aspects of the case.

All trainees and trainers will meet together at the end of the day to discuss the days activities, learning opportunities and challenges.

Day 3 (Classroom)
Applying Somatic Strategies When Helping Children

An Overview of Symptoms in Children and a Variety of Ways to Work with Children [45 minutes]

Discussion and Video [45 minutes]

Break

-Working with Activation (Charge) De-Activation (Discharge) Cycles through Play (Experiential Play for Trainees parachute, balls, game, etc.) [1 hour]

- Other Interventions with Children
Art Activities
Rhythm Activities
Grounding, Centering and Balance Activities
Social Engagement Activities
Adapting Chinese Games to Include Somatic Principles
Discussion and Questions & Answers [1 hour]

Lunch

Experiential Art and Other Activities for Trainees [2 hours]

Discussion of Field Work plans for Day Four

End of Day 3



Days 4 5 Field Work with progressively independent interventions provided by trainees. Trainers transition from teaching with direct interventions (providing psychological first aid) for earthquake survivors, to working as a 2-person team with each trainee.

Trainees will next work together as 2-person teams, providing appropriate assessment and interventions for earthquake survivors. Trainers will circulate among their training teams, providing supervision and guidance.

Day 6 Field Work may be provided in a more challenging environment, e.g., in community neighborhoods or in an orphanage. If determined to be adequately skilled, trainees will work independently with trainers providing assessments and psychological first aid with somatic techniques.


Day 7 will be a day off for trainers.


Days 8 14 will repeat the above schedule with another group of 24 trainees.

Large group orientation sessions may be provided on Day 15 and Day 16, in preparation for Phase 3 of the project.
